Preface

Prealgebra & Introductory Algebra was first written im response to the needs of those teaching combined courses. My goals were to help students make the transs tion from arithmetic to algebra and to provide a solid foundation in algebra To achieve these goals, I introduce algebraic concepts catly and repeat them often, as traditional arithmetic topics are discussed, thus laying the groundwork for algebra Specific care was taken to ensure that all core topics of an introductory algebra course are covered and that students have the most up to date relevant text prepa ration for future courses that require an understanding of algebraic fundamentals The many factors that contributed to the success of the previous edition have been retained. In preparing the Second Edition, I considered comments and sugges tions of colleagues, students, and many users of the prior edition throughout the country

What's New in the Second Edition?

Enhanced Exercise Sets

NEW! Three forms of mixed sections of exercises have been added to the Second Edition

Mixed Practice exercises combining objectives within a section

Mixed Practice exercises combining previous sections

Mixed Review exercises included at the end of the Chapter Review

These exercises require students to determine the problem type and strategy needed in order to solve it. In doing so, students need to think about key con-cepts to proceed with a correct method of solving-just as they would need to do on a test.

NEW! Vocabulary and Readiness Check exercises appear at the beginning of most exercise sets. These exercises quickly check a student's understanding of new vocabulary words so that forthcoming instructions in the problem sets will be clear. The readiness exercises center on a student's understanding of a con-cept that is necessary in order to continue with the exercise set. For example, such a readiness exercise might be for students to write out both 2 and ()

NEW! Concept Check exercises have been added to the section exercise sets.

These exercises are related to the Concept Check(s) found within the section. They help students measure their understanding of key concepts by focusing on common trouble areas. These exercises may ask students to identify a common error, and/or provide an explanation.

NEW! Concept Extensions (formerly Combining Concepts) have been revised.

These exercises extend the concepts and require students to combine several skills or concepts to solve the exercises in this section.

Increased Emphasis on Study Skills and Student Success

NEW! Study Skills Builders (formerly Study Skill Reminders) Found at the end of many exercise sets, Study Skills Builders allow instructors to assign exercises that will help students improve their study skills and take responsibility for their part of the learning process. Study Skills Builders reinforce the material found in Section 1.1. "Tips for Success in Mathematics," and serve as an excellent tool for self-assessment.

NEW! The Bigger Picture is a recurring feature that focuses on the key con-cepts of the course-operations on sets of numbers, simplifying expressions.
