Exploring Writing

Emphasizing both process and practice, Exploring Writing Sendencre and Paragraphs will help students apply and advance their writing skills. Learn ing to write effective paragraphs, mast master essential sentence skills, and read critically are turning points for student writers these skills will prepare them to write essays in college and tackle many types of writing in the real world. Along the way, there are many small but important skills to develop using specific and concrete language, selecting good supporting details, writing an effective topic sentence, creating a convincing argument, orga nizing a paragraph in a way that best fits its purpose, and so on.

Four Bases

Unity means seeing the whole as the sum of its parts; in an Ufective essay, the student should make one point and stick to it.

Support stresses the importance of using specific evidence to back up that point.

Coherence focuses on the ways writers organize and connect this evidence, as well as how they transition between ideas.

Sentence skills demonstrate an attention to the craft of writing and its elements; clear, error-free sentences maximize the effectiveness of the other three bases.

In this text, I encourage students to see writing as a skill that can be learned and a process that must be explored; while the four bases provide a founda-tion, there are many important factors in writing well. Chapter 1 asks stu-dents to examine their attitude toward writing, to write what they know-or can learn about-and to consider keeping a writing journal.
