old simple principles, but it should be true that they will not progress far beyond the beaten path without basic knowledge to guide them.
The ASA Standard C57¹ is mentioned in many places. This standard is, of course, the foundation of the transformer industry; however, like many documents which are essentially legal or legislative in nature, it is not easy to read. It is generally impossible to determine the back-ground from which the standard evolved except by researching the com-mittee reports which may (or may not) have been written at the time some particular part of the standard was written. A whole chapter (or perhaps a whole book) might be written about the American Standards Association and the societies which cooperate in formulating the ASA Standards for Transformers. This book will help to summarize some of the technical background of the standards, and will be of some help in understanding the document.
