General introduction
S If with the different pieces of furnishings we give body to the places we inhabit and we de-termine their movement and activity and, then, with the fabrics and accessories we dress them, the lighting is, without a doubt, the spirit of our spaces. Not only does it illuminate the atmosphere, but it also illuminates our interior world. It modifies our percep-tion of what surrounds us and of our very own lives as well. Lighting has two aspects: science and art. In do-mestic surroundings, the second aspect prevails over the first. We forget about concepts such as quantity of lights or sources and we concentrate more on cre-ating a climate that manages to satisfy our spirit and that provides us with wellbeing. In order to achieve this, there has to be a balance between the entrance of natural light and the amount of the artificial light distributed within the general illumination, the work-ing area, light used to accentuate and that which is decorative. In the different sections of this book, we will become acquainted with the latest proposals that have been made in each of these areas not only by the large firms, but by the sector's smaller manufactur-ers as well. We will become familiar with the top de-signers in the field and also with those who are less well known, but who offer their small beams of light to the international panorama of the lamp. In this macro-showcase of the sector, we will come into con-tact with the latest tendencies that are marked by minimalism for the office and by soft forms and col-ors for the home. From poetical pieces, and those with a touch of humor, to re-editions of models that have become cult objects, avant-garde lamps, neo-classical lamps, in this book there is room for every-thing from the most functional designs to the most daring. As Virgilio said centuries ago, "good fortune accompanies the daring."
