Preface

o succeed in college and in the workplace, today's students must be pres a wide variety of texts, and interpret, react to, and critically think about what they have read. Over 30 years of experience with developmental stu-dents has convinced me that these essential skills-writing, reading, and critical thinking-are most effectively taught when integrated. Many stu-dents flourish when given the opportunity to learn and practice these skills within a stimulating, nonthreatening framework. My goal in writ-ing Expressways is to help students build a solid foundation of writing. reading, and critical thinking skills-a repertoire that will prepare them for freshman composition, as well as for everyday, academic, and work-place writing.

Overview of the Text

Expressways features an integrated writing reading approach, step-by-step instruction, and a supportive tone. It teaches students the fundamentals of paragraph and essay writing through structured, sequential instruction; varied exercises that build upon each other; numerous examples of student writing; and the use of high-interest, Issue-oriented or workplace-related readings.

The text also emphasizes both paragraph- and essay-writing skills. Each chapter offers both paragraph- and essay-level writing assignment options, allowing instructors to move from paragraph to essay writing whenever their students are ready. The important skills of annotating, paraphrasing, summarizing, and synthesizing are covered in Chapter 16. The text also contains a brief, introductory look at locating, synthesizing, and using appropriate sources. Sentence-level concerns are presented as integral to the clear expression of ideas; a handbook with exercises appears at the end of the text; and near the end of each chapter in Parts II-IV, a "Skill Refresher related to sentence structure, grammar, or punctuation ties in with the handbook instruction.

The text emphasizes academic writing, most chapters contain student essays that are annotated to guide students in examining the aspects of witing taught in the chapter. For each essay the writer and the writing task are described and questions follow the reading to help students react to and evaluate it.

Writing in the workplace is also emphasized. Many students are work-ing and are attending college to get a better job or prepare for a new career. The text demonstrates the importance of strong writing skills in the work-place and introduces students to different forms of workplace writing. The workplace scenarios motivate students to improve their writing skills, not only to do well in college but also to succeed in their careers.
