When the idea for a book on Applications of Plasma Technology in Metallurgical Processing was first proposed as a project for ISS/AIME, there was a mixed reaction, as might have been expected. On the one hand, because there didn't seem to be many applications except academic and very special ones, the question arose: "Is there enough material for a book and would it have a wide enough general readership to justify all the work?" On the other hand, because there really are important applications under development and there is active commercial implementa-tion, a rejoinder was that "such a book would be timely and appropriate." Fortunately, the second view prevailed and work on the project started early in 1983, with the ob-jective to publish by the end of 1986. A statement very much like the preface to the book was sent to potential con-tributors and editorial participants as a synopsis, along with a recommended chapter outline. The response was a testimonial in favor of the proposal.

To make the book complete, without incorporating too much highly-technical detail, the contributors who were selected to cover the fundamentals and engineering prin-ciples agreed to cover essentials, summarized as much as practical, and not to assume so high a level of sophistica-tion as to make these sections too mysterious. With this preamble as a reassurance, the remainder of this introduc-tion will be devoted to a brief historical outline of the origins and development of thermal plasma and a brief summary of the contents of the book
